Formula Drift Judgment Day Races

I am still trying to get use to the concept of this new “Diary” category. I promised myself that if I added it to the website that I would commit to sharing a bit more of me beyond just fashion. Well, here is my first real “off topic” post. This past Saturday October 17, 2009 I was lucky enough to be treated to my first Formula Drift experience. A friend and insider who knew I had not actually seen drifting in person took really good care of me and showed me a great time. (Thank you John!!) I have seen drifting on TV and in movies before and have always been a fan of tuning my own cars, particularly BMWs. As corny as it sounds it was Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift that really exposed me to the new sport. Don’t be confused, it is a sport and it is nuts when you are there with so much going on. The event was Formula Drift’s “Judgment Day” Professional Drifting Championship held in Irwindale, California. I didn’t take too many photos because I was trying to take it all in, but I did manage to get some video of Ken Gushi’s lead round of his first race. Since I was blessed with some special Scion Racing seating I thought that it was only fitting that the video I posted be of a Scion driver. The 22 year-old Okinawa, Japan born phenom is seen here going sideways in his custom widebody RS*R Scion Racing tC. I have nothing but great things to say about the event, the people there, and look forward to going to many more drift events in the future. A word of advice to anyone who may be fortunate enough to make it out to their first event and get seating close to the action. Cover your beer. Debris from the track comes flying down like black snow and if you aren’t like me and have rubber and asphalt already running through your blood, you may be less inclined to drink your beer anyway.
