Levi Strauss & Co.invented blue jeans, and has driven their evolution from work-wear to everywhere. Levi’s Vintage Clothing “reaches into the rich history of denim to reveal and relive pieces of the past.” For the Fall/Winter 2009 season Levi’s explores the cold, hard life of the convict via this new Inside/Out theme. The collection is said to have been inspired by the uniform of the prisoner. After black and white stripes, and before orange jumpsuits, denim was the preferred fabric for institutional life. During the 1920s and 1930s, overalls, white vests and T-shirts, sack coats, and chambray shirts all found their way inside. The Inside/Out collection draws on the experiences, history, and struggles of serving time, while keeping an eye on the freedom beyond the walls.
